"Nothing pisses off a professional comedian more than some little snot-nosed punk who's been doing it for like 5 years but is already 10 years ahead of the game in terms of skill, material and originality. Aziz Ansari makes me very angry." - Patton Oswalt

  • BIG DICKTIONARY

Big Dicktionary is a two-person, long-form improvisational comedy team composed of Timmy Finch and John Brennan. Timmy is a member of The Have Nots! and Charleston's Best Local Comic five years running. John is well known as the creepy Jones' Ford guy. Timmy is close to being washed up as a performer just as John's career is taking off. Other than that, the two have just enough in common to share the stage and break many of the "rules" to entertain. Neither one is safe from the other as they keep the show tight and fast even as they call out each others' foibles. Oh yeah, they use a very big dictionary in the show.

  • DAD'S GARAGE THEATRE

Founded in 1995, Dad's Garage Theatre has grown from a small volunteer led organization to a thriving mid-size theatre led by professional artistic and administrative staff. They now entertain more than 30,000 people a year at their two-theatre facility in Inman Park and at public events across the state. Dad's gives a new definition to the phrase "original work" with their world premiere production of Cannibal: The Musical (based on the movie by South Park creator Trey Parker), the debut of O Happy Day (the lost play by Monty Python great Graham Chapman), and the recent premiere of Carrie White the Musical (an unauthorized parody adapted by the Dad's Garage Ensemble).

In addition to their outrageous original productions, Dad’s Garage produces 52 weeks a year. They perform traditional and original formats including the Improvised Soap Opera Scandal!, TheatreSports® (the only officially sanctioned team in the Southeast), their very own Improv Psychology Seminar led by Dr. Bob Frapples, and the brand new Chicago-style long form show, Long Johns.

Their work has been recognized and supported by the Atlanta Foundation, Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Doris Duke Charitable Trust, The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation, Theatre Communications Group, Metropolitan Atlanta Arts Fund and The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta. Now a fixture in the Atlanta arts scene, Dad's Garage has won Best Theatre and Best Improv Troupe in Creative Loafing for the past four years, as well as similar awards in almost every major publication in the city.

  • UPRIGHT CITIZENS BRIGADE THEATRE

    ...presents "Free to Be Friends"

    Free to Be Friends
Free To Be Friends, a stage version of the fictional 1972 regional children’s show hosted by lesbians Betty and Joan, picks up where Free To Be You and Me and The Magic Garden left off, then makes everything a little weirder.

Set on Betty and Joan’s Enchanted Patio, Free To Be Friends features a magical tree that houses the poor, berated Shylock the Owl, a gorgeous owl puppet bedecked in retro-hued felt feathers. Sue Galloway plays Betty Maddox, a wide-eyed blonde who came to the Enchanted Patio after being rescued from a macrame cult called the Macramaniacs. Her life partner, bossy, Jewish Joan Stein, used to be a school teacher in Great Neck, Long Island, but left that profession when she found it was too dominated by men. Together, Betty and Joan guide children through an array of confusing topics with lessons from the Body Box, the Giggle Patch, and with Yoga Time and by baking Self Esteem Cookies; all of which just adds up to more confusion, and then, terrible violence.

Free To Be Friends is written and performed by Sue Galloway (Stickerbook, The Real Real World, Renegade 77) and Julie Klausner (VH1, Conan, Strangers With Candy, Cat News, HBO Aspen Comedy Fest), both of whom are regular performers at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater. Neil Casey (Instant Cinema, Death By Roo-Roo, Your Favorite Thing) lends his voice to Shylock, and Dyna Moe (NeoTokyo GirlCrush 2040, My Wife The Ghost, Conan) directs.

Free To Be Friends features 5 original folk songs, including “Pancakes, Pancakes, Vietnam,” “I Like Who I Am,” and “Men or Tails.” Its set and structure, not to mention the “a little too close” relationship between the two hostesses, will tickle fans of the regional WPIX favorite, The Magic Garden. But even those unfamiliar with The Magic Garden will delight in Free To Be Friends’s fast-paced absurdity, visual flair, dumb wordplay and smart satire.

“Sue Galloway and Julie Klausner are hilarious. This is a really fun show with surprisingly exceptional set design. It has a Strangers With Candy sort of penchant for twisted one-liners and for its dark humour wrapped in a cheery outer layer.” —The Apiary

  • LOCAL SKETCH COMEDY

This year’s Local Sketch Show brings together the talented The Bottom Line sketch comedy team and the ego of Bill Davis. For the past three years, The Bottom Line has been performing comedy “every bit as capable as the current crop of Not Ready for Primetime Players” (Charleston City Paper) as part of the extended Have Nots! family. Davis, on the other hand, has been ruminating in his parents basement, waiting for the chance to spill his filth on coeds. This hour-long show will feature scenes written and performed by TBL and some of Davis’ “friends” in rapid-fire succession, sure to leave the audience in stitches ... and Davis in leg-irons.

  • STAND-UP-O-RAMA

Stand-Up-O-Rama brings together a maelstrom of local comic talent. (OK, “maelstrom” is a little over-the-top.) A quasi-hit in last year’s festival, this year’s show will once again feature the comedy of 96 WAVE’s Kenny Z, The Have Nots! Caleb Usry, and Bill Davis, who is nearly as tall as he is wide. New additions to this year’s show include Dave Ugly, and a “surprise” guest comic. Be sure to wear an extra pair of underwear ... on the outside of your pants!

  • WHOLE WORLD THEATRE

Whole World Improv evolved from workshops and classes taught by David Webster in late 1993 and early 1994 in Atlanta, Georgia. From the many students he taught, Webster hand-picked a dozen to form the core of what would become the hottest improv group in town.

The troupe made its mark by performing improv that put more emphasis on acting, character and atmosphere than on cheap laughs and thrills. The troupe was able to take on more difficult challenges and experiment with new concepts, many of which had never been done in the world of improv before. Out of this arose a troupe of talented actors that could make a situation not only humorous but human as well.
